Thousands of processor cores are expected to be integrated on a chip as the miniaturization continues. NoC architecture is an increasingly popular and feasible alternative to close the productivity gap and achieve the desired performance. This course should help the student gain an appreciation of this new approach.

CEN 4214 - Software/Hardware CoDesign
Prerequisite: CDA 3331, Intro to Microcomputers.
Focus: Unified system approach to integrate hardware and software of a state-of-the-art real-time embedded system. Topics: overview; High level modeling of and design with processors, peripherals, memory, operating system, software, communication and protocols; and Concepts of concurrent processing, real-time, control, verification, and performance evaluation in embedded systems.

Concurrent systems have many advantages - a modern multi-tasking operating system is a good example - but need to be carefully analyzed and designed; Otherwise concurrency failures may occur that can destabilize the system and compromise those advantages.
